Blog 1: Music in the Digital Ages

Music is an interesting and complex concept. How do you define something so vast and infinite? According to Wikipedia, “music is an art form whose medium is sound and silence.“ One person’s definition of music would probably be different than another person’s definition, but everyone would agree that music and the music business has gone through a change of epic proportion. The way it is produced, edited, recorded, mastered, mixed and other aspects have drastically shifted. If you wanted to make some music a few years ago you might consider buying some time at a recording studio. This can be very expensive depending on what studio you want to go to, how much time you need, or how much work you want done. In today’s digital age you could spend the money you would have spent at a studio to buy your own equipment. You can actually buy most of the equipment for a home studio at a reasonable price online or at your local music store. This equipment may not be professional studio quality but it can definitely get the job done. You can also buy Digital Audio Workstations (DAWs), which are software designed to record, edit, and playback digital audio.  This puts you in total control to turn the sounds from your head into a real piece of music. The fact that producing and editing music is so accessible today adds a creative sense to society. It means that an average Joe can simply purchase some software or equipment and begin to create songs.
